VRB-ESS is capable of providing a short-term power output of approximately 5 times nominal for periods of 1 minute in every hour. The response time for this is virtually instantaneous of the order of 5 milliseconds. The PCS has to be rated accordingly. This feature allows the VRB-ESS to support motor starts, which have large inrush currents, and to provide voltage dip ride through as well as alleviating voltage flicker caused by rolling mills and arc-furnaces.
